FALL GOURD ART

Learn a unique art form using an organic dried gourd perfect for fall. In this class you will learn to prepare a gourd for artistic design, pyrography (wood burning) on the gourd, cut fitting lids, staining and more. Make Jack-O-Lanterns, vases, ornaments, bowls, centerpieces, and birdhouses. You will create two pieces to take home. Wear comfortable clothing that you are willing to get dirty in and bring a bag lunch. Minors ages 11–16 welcome with parent. All materials are included in materials fee.

VICTORIAN BEADED HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS
instructor: Delia Munoz
Ages: 8-Adult

Design Christmas tree or other ornaments in a Victorian style using glass bulbs and a variety of glass beads. Not only will you leave with beautiful ornaments, but you can also use the techniques you learn to create fabulous jewelry on your own! Various weaving techniques will also be demonstrated to create your perfect individualized ornament.

REPORTAGE DRAWING SERIES

WORKSHOP #1 REPORTAGE DRAWING
Reportage drawing is a way to report on-site through images. In this class you will learn to become confident with line drawing. We will build your speed and endurance to draw for a longer time, capturing as much detail as possible. This is a form of drawing that will help illustrators, animators, caricature and portrait artists, people in fine art, as well as still life and figure drawing artists. Good also for those who are looking to begin to explore drawing! Materials list will be provided. Bring a sack lunch.

In this class you will work on removing the fear of
making mistakes. Various methods and exercises will be introduced to strengthen your confidence as well as design skills. We will be going to various locations in San Francisco (near the studio) and drawing on site.

WORKSHOP #3 DRAWING PEOPLE
In this one day workshop you will be introduced to
methods that will help you become more comfortable with drawing people still as well as in motion while at the same time adding striking design elements. This is not a figure drawing course - although what you will learn in this workshop will help in figure drawing. The focus
will be drawing the shapes and gestures in the clothed figure. We will be drawing on location in the park near the studio.

FUNDAMENTALS OF DESIGN: A PRIMER

Whether you work in glass, clay, fine arts, or other media, understanding the basics of design will enhance your projects. This 2-day workshop will
consist in a presentation of the five principles and basic elements of design, including both lecture and hands-on design practice. The student will develop a firm foundation of skills utilizing layout and visual
devices. Emphasis is placed on process, presentation, visual problem solving and visual literacy. Bring a bag lunch.

FUNDAMENTALS OF LANDSCAPE

Students will gain a familiarity with fundamentals of drawing landscapes. Examples will be shown, in a variety of styles, by painters from a variety of traditions, both contemporary and historical. We will work in a variety of media, including pen and ink, ink washes, and charcoal. Weather permitting, we will spend some portion of the workshop outside in Golden Gate Park. ORIGAMI BOXES

EX LIBRIS BOOKPLATE WORKSHOP
instructor: Imin Yeh

 

In this one day workshop students will create 1-2 custom Ex Libris (book plates) using woodblocks. Students will be introduced to the basic processes of woodblock printing: transferring the image on the woodcut, cutting the block, hand printing, and multi-color printing. You will leave with a finished bookplate and your personal woodcut so you
can continue making as many book plates as your library requires!

KNITTING 101

Knitting is a great way to relax, and is the perfect project to work on while waiting or on a long commute. A scarf can be finished on a flight
from SFO to NYC! In this introduction to knitting workshop, you will be taught 3 ways to cast on (CO) the beginning of a knitting project. Instruction will then go into how to knit and purl: the basis of all stitches. How to hold your knitting needles (in order to get even tension) and the importance of the correct yarn for each project will also be discussed. Most importantly, it will be fun! All materials (needles and yarn) will be provided.

KNITTING 102

Know the basics, but need some help with a new knitting project? This workshop is designed for "beyond the scarf"! Bring a pattern of your choosing and the yarn required for the project, and you will be taught how to follow the pattern. You will also be taught to alter the pattern to make it a custom piece. Instruction also covers how to handle and avoid mistakes, as well as knitting with beads.

INTRO TO ENCAUSTIC PAINTING: THE ART OF PAINTING WITH BEESWAX

An informative lecture on the properties and behavior of hot, molten beeswax as paint, the tools we use and safety. Then time to work, experiment and explore in the art of Encaustic Painting. While you’re working on your first pieces you’ll learn about working with wax, opacity and transparency, developing textures, including collage elements, carving, layering, and much more. Participants are encouraged to bring along collage elements and/or old photographs. Bring a bag lunch.

PAINTED & IMMERSED SHIBORI

Shibori is the Japanese grandmother of tie-dyeing. Create colorful, multicolored silk scarves by painting dye directly. Immerse cotton into dyepots after twisting. wrapping, clamping and/ or folding the fabric/t-shirts to produce striking traditional and contemporary patterns. Dyes are colorfast.

SILK PAINTING

Silk painting is a happy hybrid of watercolor and batik. Create a luminous silk scarf while learning everything you need to get going in this very satisfying fiber art technique. The specifics of choosing dyes, mixing colors, choosing the silk, resist and non-resist painting techniques and steam-setting the silk will be covered. If you’ve tried silk painting, you’ll discover the best strategies to prepare the silk for painting, new painting and resist techniques, easy steaming, and freedom to play with color on silk.

INTRODUCTION TO PMC

Level: Beginners Welcome!

Love metal working and want to try a new medium? This class will cover all the basics in PMC (precious metal clay). PMC is a medium that can be molded and manipulated like traditional clay, but when fired becomes a lovely piece of fine silver jewelry. This class will take you from flat forms, to setting a gemstone, to finishing your piece. You will go home with wonderful one of a kind jewelry. No previous instruction needed great for beginners as well advanced students needed guidance.

Enjoy two days of setting and embellishing fused glass or ceramic pieces in fine silver clay. PMC is a medium that starts out like a clay that can be molded and manipulated like traditional clay, but once fired, is a real piece of fine silver jewelry. Students must have finished fused glass or ceramic pieces ready for embellishing. Instructor will have pieces for sale at class if needed. Class is great for beginners as well as old pros!

LIMOGES: THE ART OF FINE
DETAILING WITH ENAMELING

instructor: Roberta Smith
Level: Intermediate & Advanced

 

Working with metal oxides and overglazes mixed with various oils creates what are known as “painting” enamels. Painting enamels give the enamelist a means to achieve fine detail and the immediacy of the hand-drawn line, as well as to simulate delicate watercolor washes. This enameling technique is sometimes known as Limoges. In this workshop you will learn how to prepare a small piece of copper prior to applying and firing painting enamels, how to prepare painting enamels, and the different methods of working with the materials.

MOKUME GANE & RETICULATION
instructor: Erik James
Level: Intermediate & Advanced

PREREQUISITE: Basic Metal Arts experience necessary. Mokume Gane is a Japanese technique used to create a beautiful decorative effect to metal. The end result resembles the grain of wood. Reticulation is a technique used to texture silver. By delicately applying a particular type of flame to a sheet of silver, the surface will ripple and buckle and create another unique effect. Bring a sack lunch. Additional fee to instructor, who will provide all materials.

FOUND OBJECT JEWELRY

Turn your junk into wearable art! With this Found Object Workshop you will learn how to wire wrap, rivet, and epoxy found items into jewelry. Make a key board necklace, a key bracelet, or button earrings! You will be able to bring in those random pieces that you have found and for some reason haven’t thrown them away. This class is an introduction to the challenging practice of painting outdoors, with its unique difficulties and rewards. Students will paint with their choice of acrylics or oils. This class will be best suited to artists with a solid foundation of painting experience, as the demands of working very fast with changing light, passersby, freezing fingers, etc., can test the most experienced. Don’t wear clothes you don’t want paint on. In the event of rain, students will meet at instructor’s studio at Market and Octavia street.
