DRAWING AND PAINTING WITH PASTELS

Experience the immediacy of drawing, with all the sumptuous richness of color you associate with painting. This is the unique essence of pastel. Different approaches from immediate, lively sketches, to highly developed paintings will be encouraged, and instruction will include basic color theory and other fundamental drawing and painting principles, as well as information on materials and lots of individual feedback. CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING
Instructor: Madeleine Fu
 

Focus is on instruction in Chinese style watercolor painting techniques. Demonstrations and personal critiques by the instructor help students master this age-old medium. Students will be responsible for acquiring personal painting supplies (approximately $50). Materials list provided upon registration.

special note: You may drop-in this class for $12 per class if space allows. If you do not have any Chinese brush painting supplies, you may purchase a brush and rice paper from instructor for $10.

LIFE DRAWING
Instructor: Virginia Banta

Prerequisite: Basic Drawing or equivalent experience

Come experience drawing from a live model. Class is self-directed, each week focusing on a different part of the anatomy. Critiques of student work made upon request to the instructor. Emphasis is on gesture poses, short poses, ending with 20 minute poses. Please bring paper and drawing materials to class.

LAYING THE PERFECT WASH &
PAINTING FLOWERS & TREES

Level: Beginning and Experienced Watercolorists


We will practice the watercolor art of laying even and gradated washes. This is most basic to your success in painting wonderful watercolors including glazing for special effects of light and color. Then we will apply these results to a variety of techniques for painting flowers and trees, using blending, wet into wet and dry brush. The process will give you good skills to build creative watercolors. The instructor demonstrates all the techniques and gives individual direction, encouraging your unique expression. A combination of still life set ups and photos will be used. Materials list provided upon registration.

ART OF COLLAGE
Instructor: Dolores Gray

col·lage (n) french: derived from the word coller, meaning “to paste.”

Papers, old photos, text, ephemera, fabric, found treasures, and the contents of your junk drawer are all the ingredients needed to create imaginative and fanciful collages and assemblages. Class will explore creating texture background, image transfers, and painted surfaces. Discussion of materials, adhesives, and papers for collaging.

WATERCOLOR BASICS
Instructor: Mary Harden

Prerequisite: Beginning or Continuing Watercolorists


Missed the basics along the way? This class offers a simple overview of watercolor materials and techniques. We will take time to create a custom designed palette for each student after experimenting with a variety of pigments. We will look at new colors that have recently been developed that produce beautiful rich granulation.

In addition, we will explore the 12 basic watercolor edges and learn to use frisket to mask off areas for dramatic contrasts. Collecting samples from the park, we will combine pen and ink with watercolors to create botanical studies. Material list provided upon registration.

Learn the art of china painting! This class offers begining students an introduction to paints and practices and instruction in technique. Continuing students have a chance to work on individual projects and perhaps pick-up some helpful hints!

COLOR MIXING & VALUE CONTRAST
instructor: Vesta Kirby

By popular request we will focus in depth on mixing colors and creating high value contrast. We will explore how to achieve a lively result of mixing two colors to make a third, making complements vibrate and their muted effects, how to create rich earth hues, dark hues and a variety of greens and blues. We will address color temperature and value changes, transparency and opacity of pigments. Painting color charts will give you a great resource to use forever. We will address dynamic color as well as subtle color. And, finally, applying Color Harmony will enhance your watercolor paintings. Be ready for an exciting adventure in the ways of powerful COLOR! The Basics & Beyond

While the outdoor light and colors change around us, it's time to get motivated and start drawing. For
the first half of this mini-course, the basic strategies of line contour, shading, and perspective are covered. The second half introduces how to creatively use watercolor washes and pen lines by experimenting with value and color mixing. For the first class bring an 18"x24" newsprint pad,
4B and 6B graphite pencils, a 6B charcoal pencil, and a kneaded eraser.

EXPLORE IMAGERY IN PLEIN
AIR & WATER REFLECTIONS

instructor: Vesta Kirby

This afternoon session will be dedicated to exploring your own imagery in Plein Air painting. We will visit a variety of locations in the park and also paint water and reflections at different sites. Other media may be introduced such as pen, ink, and colored pencils with watercolor. We will review watercolor techniques and discuss composition. The instructor will prepare you for the ease of outdoor painting, using minimal equipment. The experience will also be a source for expanding your observational power for imagery.
