DRAWING AND PAINTING WITH PASTELS

Experience the immediacy of drawing, with all the sumptuous richness of color you associate with painting. This is the unique essence of pastel. Different approaches from immediate, lively sketches, to highly developed paintings will be encouraged, and instruction will include basic color theory and other fundamental drawing and painting principles, as well as information on materials and lots of individual feedback.

CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING
Instructor: Madeleine Fu
 

Focus is on instruction in Chinese style watercolor painting techniques. Demonstrations and personal critiques by the instructor help students master this age-old medium. Students will be responsible for acquiring personal painting supplies (approximately $50). Materials list provided upon registration.

special note: You may drop-in this class for $12 per class if space allows. If you do not have any Chinese brush painting supplies, you may purchase a brush and rice paper from instructor for $10.

LIFE DRAWING
Instructor: Virginia Banta

Prerequisite: Basic Drawing or equivalent experience

Come experience drawing from a live model. Class is self-directed, each week focusing on a different part of the anatomy. Critiques of student work made upon request to the instructor. Emphasis is on gesture poses, short poses, ending with 20 minute poses. Please bring paper and drawing materials to class.

special note: You may drop in on this class if space allows. Drop in fee is $15 or $12 if you are enrolled in other classes at the studio. Enrolled students receive priority seating.

EXPRESSIVE BRUSHWORK & COLOR HARMONY

Level: Beginning and Experienced Watercolorists


Explore expressive brush strokes making bold and confident strokes to give your paintings a fresh liveliness. And, we will focus on LUMINOUS color harmony, VALUE CONTRAST AND how colors interact using Itten’s “Seven Color Contrasts” to create beautiful and harmonious paintings. Other watercolor techniques include laying washes, glazing, blending, gradating, wet into wet and dry techniques. Still life set-ups and painting from photographs or pictures will BE USED TO enhance your painting skills. The instructor encourages individual expression and gives direction to each person. Material list provided at registration. For beginners and continuing students.

NEW MIXED MEDIA CLASS!

ALTERED SHRINES: MIXED MEDIA CLASS
Instructor: Dolores Gray

Learn how to create your own shrines and assemblage pieces. Create a shrine from a part of yourself or that special memory. Shrines can be spontaneously born from moments great and small that emerge from simple childhood memories or spectacular journeys. Many personal shrines begin as boxes, as small as a matchbox or as large as a suitcase.Creating a shrine can be an act of exploration of the personal, spiritual or the sublime. Come explore your sense of the ‘domesticated’ shrine. That is tailored to your theme, colors, and style, and may include personal objects, found objects or your own photos. They may commemorate a special occasion, such as a birthday, wedding, journey or the fun of juxtaposition.

WATERCOLOR BASICS
Instructor: Mary Harden

Prerequisite: Beginning or Continuing Watercolorists


Missed the basics along the way? This class offers a simple overview of watercolor materials and techniques. We will take time to create a custom designed palette for each student after experimenting with a variety of pigments. We will look at new colors that have recently been developed that produce beautiful rich granulation.

In addition, we will explore the 12 basic watercolor edges and learn to use frisket to mask off areas for dramatic contrasts. Collecting samples from the park, we will combine pen and ink with watercolors to create botanical studies. Material list provided upon registration.

Designed for absolute beginners and those wishing to improve their painting skills. Anyone who can hold a pencil can learn to draw with some degree of proficiency. With your commitment, you can and will! Drawing skills are essential to all artists, be it ceramics, glass or painting. Primary emphasis is on seeing, using right-brain techniques. Materials list given at first class.

Learn the art of china painting! This class offers begining students an introduction to paints and practices and instruction in technique. Continuing students have a chance to work on individual projects and perhaps pick-up some helpful hints!

CREATIVE MONOPRINTS: THE PAINTERLY PRINT HANDMADE

Make creative one of a kind Monotype Prints using watercolor, acrylics, and ink. Explore the printmaking process using traditional printmaking techniques: drypoint, woodcut, relief and basic intaglio techniques. This will be a great introduction to printmaking if you have ever wanted to place your mark on paper. Open to all levels.

THURSDAY NIGHT DRAWING STUDIO:
The Basics & Beyond

While the outdoor light and colors change around us, it's time to get motivated and start drawing. For
the first half of this mini-course, the basic strategies of line contour, shading, and perspective are covered. The second half introduces how to creatively use watercolor washes and pen lines by experimenting with value and color mixing. For the first class bring an 18"x24" newsprint pad,
4B and 6B graphite pencils, a 6B charcoal pencil, and a kneaded eraser.
